Welcome!
Welcome to this e-commerce business success story! In this profile, we interviewed Nick Hohman, the owner of Waveband Communications. Our hope is that you find this interview to be enlightening and inspiring as you seek to start and grow your very own online brand!
Thank you for joining us for this e-commerce business success story! We’d like to start by getting an understanding of your backstory. How did you come to own your business?
My brother, Jeff Hohman founded Waveband Communications in 2002 with the idea of providing affordable aftermarket accessories for public safety. In 2007, I [Nick Hohman], started as a fulfillment specialist at Waveband Communications. In 2015, my brother went on to pursue other projects, and I [Nick Hohman] purchased the company from him and am now the current owner and President of Waveband Communications.
Terrific! Now, this article is about profiling successful e-commerce businesses. So – can you share your top 3 keys to running a successful online brand?
My top 3 keys for running a successful online brand are to first, keep up with the changes and technology. Our industry is constantly changing and innovating for the better and we must keep up with the latest technology to be able to keep providing for our customers.
Our 2nd key to success is to implement a diverse marketing strategy. Online is a busy place. It’s hard to get customers to see you. Having a diverse Marketing plan with various strategies helps you stand out amongst the crowd.
And lastly, our 3rd key to success is keeping up with our competition. What social media platforms are they using? What’s making visitors leave and go to them? You’ll want to adjust your techniques accordingly.
Excellent. Now, I’m sure it hasn’t always been that easy. Can you tell a story about one challenge, setback, or mistake that you’ve had to overcome on the road to success? How can others learn from your mistakes?
A challenge that we are encountering, and a lot of other businesses are too, is the supply chain problems due to the pandemic and chip shortage. We are still seeing longer than normal lead times for our products. Not Not having certain products that were our top sellers hit not only us but our customers who rely on these products to be able to communicate in the most demanding environments. We don’t have much control over this but what we’ve learned is to find other alternatives and keep in touch with customers through the process.
Thanks for that. Now – we want to know what’s next! What new initiatives are you rolling out at your business and what results are you hoping to see?
This year we are focusing on emerging into international markets like Canada. We only have a small percentage of international sales and we’re looking to improve this in the coming year.
Sounds exciting! Any final words of advice for our readers?
My final piece of advice for readers is to be persistent. You have to be able to adapt as your market environment changes. You need to have a strategic vision to be able to grow year over year. Finally, you need to be to adjust quickly as the market changes or you will be left behind.
